The 2007 Big
Top Tour
opened at the Circus
Barn in Greensboro VT on
Sunday, July 1st. Over
the summer, the Troupers
performed
72 shows in 15
towns in
Vermont, Massachusetts,
New Hampshire, Maine and
New York before returning
to Greensboro to finish
on August 18th &
19th.
Juggling, tumbling, high
wire, trapeze, aerial acts,
contortion, clowns, live
music and tailor-made costumes—the
full-length production
featured these youth performers
in the bright blue-and-white
tent sharing the ring
with adult performer-coaches.
Smirkus is the only American youth circus to put
on a full-season tour under its own Big Top, a 24-meter,
750-seat, one-ring tent in the European style.
Every year the company
creates an entirely new
theme. In the past Smirkus
has celebrated, and poked
fun at, Pirates,
Sci-Fi, the Wild West,
Rock ’n
Roll, Robin Hood,
comic book Superheroes,
Alice in Wonderland,
Pinocchio, Tropical
Vacation, and The
Zoot Suit Caper.
At Circus Smirkus, the
stars are all kids.
They range in age from
12 to 18, and come from
many states and countries.
Troupers are selected
for skill, character,
and that special spark
of personality through
an audition
process that begins
in the autumn of each
year.
At the start of the summer,
they have only three
weeks to learn
and practice the two-hour
show before taking it
on the road. The tour
means hours
of grueling training and
practice, performing
full two-hour
shows twice a day,
traveling away from home
for ten weeks, loading
and unloading all the apparatus,
costumes and props. They
learn responsibility,
teamwork, professionalism,
consideration for others, and the importance
of community, and of giving
service back to society,
which they do through
free performances at children’s
hospitals and nursing
homes.
Circus Smirkus is a non-profit
arts and education organization,
and our self-presented
performances directly
support the scholarship
fund and operating
expenses of the Circus
Smirkus tour, circus
camp, in-school
residencies,
and other circus
arts adventures
for kids and adults.
